The Registration Service in England and Wales started in July 1837 and is one of the oldest services administered by local authorities.

The principal functions of the Service are:-

  • To establish a permanent legal record of every birth, marriage and death and to provide documentary evidence of these events
  • To authorise civil and non-conformist marriage and conduct civil marriage and civil partnership ceremonies
  • To furnish the Registrar General and Local Authorities with regular returns of births, marriages and deaths for vital work on population statistics and medical research.

Lancashire Registrar Offices are situated in Burnley, Chorley, Blackpool, Accrington, Lancaster, Preston, Clitheroe and Ormskirk.

The Registrar Office for the Pendle area is located in Burnley. Burnley and Pendle Registrar Office is situated close to Burnley Town Centre in a Grade 2 listed building. The marriage room located on the first floor is tastefully decorated and can accommodate approximately 50 guests with seating for 35.
