History

The Church of Christ, Scientist - better known at the Christian Science movement - was founded in the USA in 1879 by Mary Baker Eddy.  Throughout her life she faced hardship and poor health, but overcame these to become one of the most prominent women of her day.  As well as founding the Christian Science movement, she also founded a teaching college, wrote a book setting out the basis of healing through prayer, and created a publishing house which among other publications produces the multiple Pulitzer-winning daily newspaper The Christian Science Monitor .

Christian Science is essentially a belief system that involves the use of prayer for healing, and can be practiced by people of other religions in addition to their own with no conflict of faith.  Being a member of the church is not a prerequisite for practicing the beliefs.

Beliefs

Christian Science is based on Christian principles, but adds the belief that the true nature of all individuals as children of God is a spiritual one.

Christian Scientists believe that God’s infinite goodness, realized in prayer, heals.

Locally

There is a Christian Science church at 211 Burnley Road, Accrington.  You can contact them on 01254 879643
