FORCED MARRIAGES

A forced marriage is "a marriage conducted without the valid consent of both parties, and where some element of duress such as blackmail, physical violence and emotional abuse, is a factor".

Some young people in the UK or overseas may find themselves facing a forced marriage, where one party is forced to marry another against their will.

There is a general belief that some religions condone forced marriage but this is not true.  Every major faith the world over condemns this practice.

If someone is forcing a person to marry against their will they may be breaking the law in the UK and in other countries. Every individual has the right to legal protection.

If you or someone you know is in danger of being forced into a marriage, you should call Pendle Community Safety Department immediately on 01282 472190.

What You Should Do

Some forced marriages take place in the UK, whereas others involve a British citizen being taken abroad, or a partner coming from overseas.  Whatever the situation, it is essential that you make note of relevant passport details, including number, date and place of issue, and National Insurance numbers.  You should try to obtain details of travel dates and flight numbers.  You should then leave this information with a trustworthy person or with Pendle Community Safety Department .

If You Are In The UK

If you are in the UK and are involved in a forced marriage or wish to report one, contact Pendle Community Safety Department.

If You Are Being Taken Abroad

Try to contact your the Pendle Community Safety Department before you go and leave the passport and travel details with them and another trusted person.  If you have a choice, in order to protect yourself, think carefully before you go.

If You Are At A UK Airport

Help and advice is available at airports in the UK.  If yu are able, try to make any airport official aware that you, or someone known to you is being taken out of the country against their will.

If you or someone you know is en route to Manchester Aiport, contact Greater Manchester Police's hotline on 0161 872 5050.

If You Are At An Overseas Airport

Try to bing the situation to the attention of any airport official.  It is important that this is done as soon as possible and prior to immigration or entry clearance.  Be assured that airport officials are becoming increasingly aware of this very sensitive subject.  Any intervention is carried out with the greatest discretion.

Whilst Overseas

If you, or someoone you know to be at risk is overseas, contact the nearest British High Commission/Embassy or the British High Commission in London.
