Pendle's Fire Stations

Pendle has four fire stations, one in Nelson, one in Colne, one in Earby and one in Barnoldswick.  Only Nelson is a full-time fire station with full-time employees.  The other stations are crewed by part-time community firefighters who respond to calls from work or home as needed. They have to be at the station within five minutes and in addition are required to attend the station on one night per week for training or drill.

All the fire stations in Pendle are part of the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, which is one of the largest and busiest fire services in the UK.  The headquarters of the LFRS are in Preston.

Nelson Fire Station

Nelson Fire Brigade was formed on 01 March 1873 when eight firemen were appointed. The first fire station was a room in a private house in which Fire Brigade equipment was stored.

In 1890 a fire station in Elland Street was constructed to house Nelson's first fire engine. The Lord Nelson. This new appliance was horse drawn and the pump was steam powered at a cost of £751.

The present fire station in Bradley Road was officially opened on 24 March 1970. The station area covers the towns of Nelson, Barrowford and Brierfield, and the villages of Barley, Blacko, Fence, Newchurch, Reedley, Reedley Hallows, Roughlee, Sabden Fold, Spen Brook and Wheatley Lane. The station area is 6,418 hectares in size, with a population of 47,906. The current fire station has two fire engines.
