"As we traveled, we came near a very great hill, called Pendle Hill, and I was moved of the Lord to go up to the top of it; which I did with difficulty, it was so very steep and high. When I was come to the top, I saw the sea bordering upon Lancashire. From the top of this hill the Lord let me see in what places he had a great people to be gathered."

Journal of George Fox, Chapter VI, A New Era Begins, 1652

It was on Pendle Hill in 1652 that George Fox had a vision that would transform his view of the existing religions and lead to the creation of a new one.  His view of the world as a place where everything and everyone was blessed with the light of God led to the formation of the Religious Society Of Friends (better known as Quakers).

Pendle Hill

The first Quaker meeting room was at Trawden, in Pendle, and there is still a Quaker meeting room in Pendle today, in the town of Brierfield.  The link between Pendle and the Religious Society of Friends has continued - one of the main US Retreat Centers is called Pendle Hill, and Quakers still make pilgrimages to the Lancashire hill to this day.
