Newchurch-in-Pendle clings to the Southern side of Pendle Hill, and offers spectacular views of the surrounding area.  It is easily reached by road from Barley or Fence, and is on the Pendle Witches Scenic Car Trail as well as being a crossed by a number of public footpaths and walks - including the Pendle Way.

The most well-known features of the village are the church and the unusual local shop.

Witches Galore

There has been a chapel recorded on the site of the current church since 1250, and todays St. Mary's may have elements of the older structures that have stood in its location over the centuries.  However, the most notable architectural feature to visitors is the strange oval that is fixed into the tower halfway up.  Locally this feature is known as The Eye Of God, and is reputed to protect the village from evil, although its origins are obscure. Please note that the church is usually open to visitors and is well worth exploring for its many period features.  In August the traditional rush-bearing ceremony still takes place.

Newchurch is attached to the Pendle Witch myth due to a legend that is is the burial place of one of the witches, Alice Nutter.  Look out for the grave to the left of the church door against the outside wall which has a skull and crossbones carved into it!

You can't miss the local shop, Witches Galore, when you drive or walk into the village.  The witches outside will catch your eye straight away!  Witches Galore bills itself as "the small shop with the big reputation" and it more than lives up to that boast, being crammed with souvenirs, books, clothing, maps and postcards relating to witches, Pendle and folklore. They also sell confectionery, cold drinks and ice-cream.

Unfortunately the village pub was coverted to a private house some years ago, but there is still a public toilet, so hikers need not despair!

Please ensure that you park sensibly if visiting Newchurch - it is often easier to park in Barley and walk to Newchurch, although there are a couple of parking spaces on the main road just outside the village and near the school.
