Pendle Chess Club
This site is in course of preparation following Nelson Chess Club's change of name. In the meantime please go HERE for the original website. All the following links work in a new window.
Pendle Chess Club Meets at 7.30pm every Thursday
at
Nelson Cricket Club
Surrey Road (Gill Street) just off the M56 by the Thatch and Thistle - a map and more detailed directions are available here .
Players of all standards are welcome but as we usually play upstairs, and there is no lift, we are afraid the club is not very disabled friendly. We have a NO SMOKING policy. There is plenty of parking both inside the ground and just outside. In the Winter there is often a match in progress but there are usually several membersnot involved in this so available to play you. We have plenty of equipment.
We are the only club with open membership in Pendle and Burnley (there are two other clubs in Burnley but they have restricted membership) Since the demise of the Skipton Chess Club we may also be the most convenient club for players from that area.
Subscriptions are low - just sufficient to meet our needs - £5 this year, Nil last year!
Feel free to just turn up but if you want more information phone or Email the Secretary.
After winning the Second Division in 2004-5 the A team were immediately relegated again last season so this year have again got two teams both in Division Two. For details of this seasons fixtures, results and individual successes go here. The First team finished in joint Second place and the Second team in Fifth place.

The Club's members also run the Mayor of Pendle's Chess Tournament held annually in Spring for the schoolchildren of the Borough. Details of the tournament and past winners are here. In 2006 the current Mayor (Cllr Sharon Davies) has provided a new trophy for an Open Championship which will replace the current club knock-out summer championship. Details are here .
The history of the club is in two parts. Basically pre and post war. There is a very detailed record of the early years when it was Colne Chess Club and this section is taken from a phamplet published a few years ago. The post war history is less well documented and considerably shorter!
In the 2007-8 season the clubs two teams finished in 2nd & 5th place in the ELCA 2nd Division.
