Pendle Chess Club

Please go HERE for the original Nelson Chess Club website. All the following links EXCEPT THE MAP work in a new window.

Pendle Chess Club
Meets at 7.30pm every Wednesday at

Barrowford Working Mens Club
1 David Steet, Barrowford

BB9 6HL    Tel: 01282  615472

Leave the M65 at juntion 13 and head into Barrowford for nearly a mile to pass the White Bear turning left just after up Halstead Lane. A detailed map is available here .

Players of all standards are welcome - we usually play upstairs, and there is only a chairlift, so we are afraid the club is only partially disabled friendly. There is street parking nearby.

In the Winter there is often a match in progress but there are usually several
members not involved in this so available to play you. We have plenty of equipment.

We are the only club with open membership in Pendle and Burnley (there are two other clubs in Burnley but they have restricted membership) Since the demise of the Skipton Chess Club we may also be the most convenient club for players from that area.

Feel free to just turn up but if you want more information phone or  Email the Secretary.

After winning the Second Division in 2004-5 the A team were immediately relegated again so have two teams both in Division Two. For details of this seasons fixtures, results and individual successes go here

The Club's members also run the Mayor of Pendle's Chess Tournament held annually in Spring for the schoolchildren of the Borough. Details of the tournament and past winners are here. In 2006 the current Mayor (Cllr Sharon Davies) has provided a new trophy for an Open Championship which will replace the current club knock-out summer championship. Details are here .

The history of the club is in two parts. Basically pre and post war. There is a very detailed record of the early years when it was Colne Chess Club and this section is taken from a phamplet published a few years ago. The post war history is less well documented and considerably shorter!

In the 2008-9 season the clubs two teams finished in 2nd & 6th place in the ELCA 2nd Division.  The first team was equal first but lost the play-off for entry to the First Division. In 2009-10 the 1st team was again 2nd.
