The annual precept has to cover all the expenses of the town. This includes the salary and wage of the Town Clerk and Town Warden and the funding of office overheads, community events, hanging flower baskets and Christmas trees.
In addition, the town supplements the cutting of grass on the verges leading into the town and the tidying of the Town Square. This is to improve upon the standard maintained by the county and district councils.
The Town Council also supports other items which it considers of benefit to the town . It does this on an ad hoc basis. For example, it has supported the construction of a Wheelie Park in Victory Park for young people and regularly provides small project grants to local voluntary and community groups. It also provides financial support to the town's two big annual events - Fireworks Night and Christmas Lights Switch-On.
