The first Pendle Triathlon in 6 years took place in Barnoldswick on Sunday 16th September and saw 70 triathletes compete for the prestigious title of winner.
Phil Storey, Chief Executive of Pendle Triathlon organisers Pendle Leisure Trust commented: “We are delighted to put Pendle Triathlon back on the national calendar after 6 years of absence and are pleased by the number of competitors who travelled to Barnoldswick to compete. Triathlon is truly the greatest test of stamina, fitness & athletic ability and the standard of entries this year was truly gratifying.”
Triathlon is one of the fastest growing competitive sports in the country and includes 3 disciplines; swimming, road running and cycling. At its’ peak Pendle Triathlon saw c. 360 individuals race against each other, whilst later years saw restrictions imposed to limit the number of entries to a maximum of 240, so even competition just to compete was high!
Organised as a time trial, all competitors in Pendle Triathlon started at minute intervals, with a timed 10 minute gap in between each discipline. Mr Storey commented; “The Pendle landscape offers a very challenging course and we hope to restore this event back to its former glory.”
Details of the event
Standard Course: 500m Swim, 10.4km Run, 22.5km Cycle.
Elite Course: 800m Swim, 14.4km Run, 33.6km Cycle
Three budding sports men and women from the Pendle Triathlon’s official sponsors, Bridge Street Stone, took part. Andrew Hay (cyclist), Sean Kennedy (runner) and Kathryn Richardson (swimmer) each trained hard in preparation for the event with the added incentive of raising money for Bridge Street Stone’s chosen charity - Burnley General Hospital’s Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit (NNICU). Swimmer Kathryn Richardson commented: “It was all very exciting and I’m very proud to be doing it for a such a worthy cause - the NNICU ward of Burnley General Hospital.”

Bridge Street Stone’s Director, Stephen Smith, himself a former employee of Pendle Leisure Trust and past Pendle Triathlon competitor, commented; “Personally it gives me great pleasure to be involved in the Pendle Triathlon and to support such a fantastic sporting event. Pendle Triathlon is not only a great platform for local sporting talent to shine, but it also draws a lot of interest from national triathlon competitors.”
