Alkincoates Woodland LNR is located on the estate that once belonged to the Parker family who have been part of the area's history since 1349. Within the estate stood Campion Green Farm (the longest-standing farm house in Colne) and an 18th Centurt route from the Leeds/Liverpool Canal to Colne town centre.
The reserve includes areas of woodland, meadow, ponds and wetland and there is a comprehensive bird feeding programme on site that ensures a rich variety of species visit the habitat daily. Oak, hawthorn, alder, hazel and field maple are among the trees now established on site, and there are a wide range of grasses, wildflowers and plants. Bird varieties observed include blue tits, jays, chiffchaffs and starlings, and visitors may be lucky enough to spot deer, rabbits, shrews, hares or foxes. The wetland areas are home to frogs, newts and water voles.
To get to Alkincoates Woodland LNR, you can approach on foot via Alkincoates Park , onto the lane past Rookery Cottage, until you reach the entrance on the Right. Alternatively you can drive up Harrison Drive in Colne, continue to the top, straight across the next roundabout then take the right fork to the rugby club car park. Please do not park on Red Lane. |
