Parks and Open Spaces
The Council currently maintains approximately 450 hectares of Public Open Spaces; this includes eleven parks, seven playing field sites, eleven informal recreation grounds and twelve town gardens. In addition the Council is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of nine war memorials and their surroundings. The borough operates a total of twenty-nine play areas , nineteen of which meet the standard for play areas as defined by the Fields in Trust six-acre standard.

Green Flag Awards are national prestigious awards given for high standards in individual parks. The Green Flag Award scheme has been developed by charities concerned with the environment and park management and is managed by the Civic Trust. The award's primary aim is to raise the standard of public parks.
