Pendle has a long history of settlement dating back to pre-Roman times. There are examples of Roman Roads in the Lancashire area, and traces of old stone circles are located on nearby moors between Nelson and Burnley. Exploring the countryside around Pendle often reveals surprising gems. Wycoller country park has some fine example sof vacchary walls, and a medieval clapper bridge, In several villages such as Barrowford and Roughlee there are some fine examples of early British architecture, while the church at Newchurch has the enigmatic Eye Of God carved into the tower. .
