Pendle's Sustainable Community Strategy 2008 - 18

Our Sustainable Community Strategy has now been approved by Pendle Council and Pendle Partnership.

This is a key document for Pendle which sets out our key challenges over the next 10 years and our key priorities for improving quality of life for everyone.

Our vision for Pendle:

We want Pendle to be a place where quality of life continues to improve and where people respect one another and their neighbourhoods. We want Pendle to be a place where everyone aspires to reach their full potential. We want to be recognised locally, regionally and nationally as a great area to live, learn, work, play and visit.

The Strategy outlines eight priority goals that will help us achieve our vision.

  • To support confident communities that are socially cohesive, creative, tolerant and considerate of the needs of all ages and cultures.
  • To create and sustain a dynamic, competitive and healthy local economy - providing the jobs of the future and the talents and skills to fill them.
  • To create a vibrant housing market offering a mix of high quality and affordable housing for all.
  • To create a Borough in which people feel safe and crime continues to fall.
  • To help people to live long, healthy and independent lives.
  • To deepen our understanding and respsct for the environment.
  • To do all we can to give our children and young people the best start in life and the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
  • To help older people live their lives in the way they choose and to support their independent and active living.

Achieving our vision in a way that delivers sustainable benefits relies on planning and delivering actions in a way that takes into account our cross cutting principles. These Four principles are:

  • ensuring fairness throughout Pendle
  • limiting the use of natural resources
  • engaging communities
  • supporting a fair economy.

Pendle Economic Regeneration Programme (PERP)

Aimed at strengthening and diversifying Pendle's economy, PERP is part of a successful series of area-based funding initiatives run within the Borough.

Projects which received funding have all helped to ensure a skilled, adaptable workforce, equipped to meet future challenges.

Physical examples include Colne Children's Centre, Number One Market Street, Nelson and Colne One Site College and the Business Innovation Centre.

In a nutshell PERP has seen:

  • more than 600 jobs created
  • 1,490 jobs safeguarded
  • 9,279 sqm of new industrial/commercial floorspace
  • 578 businesses advised
  • 91 businesses trade electronically
  • 7 ICT projects supported
  • 116 businesses benefir from ICT
  • more than £9.5m of private sector investment.

Councillor Alan Davies, Chairman of Pendle Partnership, said: "I am proud ti have been involved in a scheme which has helped to regenerate the Borough and made a real difference to local people's lives."
