Healthy Communities

This project, run by the Pendle Leisure Trust, received funding from Pendle Partnership to promote the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle for residents in deprived wards in Pendle. The project also aims to tackle the health problems that social exclusion can cause.

The Healthy Communities project provides exercise sessions, a GP exercise referral scheme and classes including quitting smoking, dietary advice, first aid and drug awareness.

The projects helps overcome barriers to healthy living such as a lack of confidence, poor transport or cultural influences, by taking the classes into the heart of local communities in places like halls, churches and youth clubs. The classes also give people the chance to make new friends. Organisations such as Surestart, Walking the Way to Health and the Stroke Association have worked in partnership with the project to give participant extra information and support.

The Asian ladies exercise classes that are held in the Silverman Hall in Nelson have been a particular success with up to 100 Asian ladies taking part from a register of 365.
