New Chess Tournament

The Mayor of Pendle (Cllr Sharon Davies) has presented a trophy for a chess tournament to be played for during 2006 (and subsequent years) and open to members of Nelson Chess Club and anyone living in the Borough.

The tournament will be played over several months, on an all-play-all basis, and will be in two divisions due to the number of entrants. Games will be at the ELCA time rate (35 moves in 75 minutes and 15 minutes for each subsequent 15 moves) and played to a finish with a sealed move and later resumption if necessary. Games will be sent for Grading. The tournament will not necessarily be played on the normal club night although it is expected that the majority of matches will be. There will be an entry fee of £2 half of which will be given to the Mayoress’s Charities.

We hope that several former club members still living in the area will take part as well as anyone else interested in playing.

Previous Championships

There were four Pendle Championships in 1987-1991 - for details see the Annual Mayors Championship - and the Club has held a Summer Knock-Out Championship most years although no records were kept of the winners - and frequently they were never finished. The only known winners were:
