THE PENDLE WALKING FESTIVAL in 2008 will be for 9 days from Saturday 30th August to Sunday 7th September

BARLEY with Wheatley Booth

Appropriately the alphabetically first parish of Pendle is Barley for this includes Pen itself. Why Pen? – well Pen is a hill, ..dle is another hill, and hill is a .. I could go on but instead it’s up Penpenpen, Hillhillhill or even Pendle Hill – but not by the normal straightforward route because Pen is only an incidental part of the bounds of Barley.

The way up and down Pendle is straightforward – being part of the Pendle Way there are plenty of markers – but can be a bit difficult elsewhere. Three other hills are negotiated on the walk – Saddlers Height, Wheathead Height and Stang Top so there’s a lot of ups and downs making it a great walk, if a little on the tough side!

Start:             Barley car park (823403)

Length:         15k

Height gain: about 700m

Time:            5/6 hours

Grade:          Hard
