The project works closely with Pendle’s schools. Lunchtime growing clubs are offered to St Paul’s, Marsden and Holy Saviours. The project also links with other local schools by delivering healthy lifestyle sessions as part of Heath and Fitness weeks, some of the sessions we offer are smoothie making, fruit and vegetable tasting, healthy diets, exercise and the body, composting and recycling, herb growing, allotment visits and many more.
We had a visit from the Year 3 children from Barnoldswick C of E, we showed them around the allotment site and looked all the different uses for the allotments on site (there is over 100 allotments on the Hodge House site), we looked at recycled containers and visited some of the specialist growers allotments (one grow leeks and carrots that were six feet tall), then they had a close look at the Grow and Sow Allotments it was a very hot day so we couldn’t stay in the polytunnels for long as it was very hot inside them and they had a look at the compost bins and the wormery (its home to over 500 worms). We were very happy to receive the following thank you letter.
Dear Joanne
Just writing to say a big thank you for showing us round the allotments. Those strawberries were absolutely delicious! It must be hard work looking after all the plants. I didn’t know leeks grew so tall. We were surprised how many plants were in the back yard, and were we roasting in the tunnels! We are growing sunflowers and tomatoes in school. Five children in our class have an allotment. What a surprise we had when we saw those worms!
Best Wishes
From Megan and Class 3
P.S. Keep up the good work.
They have already booked for another tour next year.
