Inclusive Fitness for ALL members of the Community

The gym at West Craven Sports Centre in Barnoldswick is a much friendlier place for people with disabilities and people with health problems. This is due to the Inclusive Fitness Initiative. Installation of new gym equipment and extensive training of the gym staff has made exercising more accessible to everyone. The gym was refurbished last year and launched on the 15th April 2005.  It has had a great impact on all members of the Community who has used the facility.

The gym has seven new pieces of equipment including a treadmill with a soft mat that is suitable for people with knee problems. It’s also is lower than regular treadmills making it easier to get on and off.

We have a bike which is lower slung - good for people with hip problems this has wider pedals for easier access. There is a rower which the seat can be removed to allow people in wheelchairs to use.

All seven pieces of equipment have highly visible and tactile controls in high contrast black and yellow, and they all beep loudly when exercise time is up.

The new equipment has been funded by the Sport England Lottery Fund, North West Development Agency, and the West Craven Together Initiative.

Anne Meachem, West Craven Sports Centre’s Inclusive Activator said, “Unwittingly, many gyms and sports clubs have facilities that are difficult for people who are physically impaired, visually impaired, people who are deaf or people with arthritis or any other health problems whether it is short term or long term. Everyone can improve their health by participating in regular exercise. If you have a weight or fitness problem or you wish to make new friends, West Craven Sports Centre Barnoldswick is the place to visit with all the staff on hand to help.”

“It has been wonderful to see the benefit to local people using this facility during this, the first year.”

On a Friday evening we introduced a session for young people who are disabled. These sessions offered specific groups, aged 13 -19, who can not get access to main stream sporting activities, the opportunity to come and take part in exercise. All the staff are highly trained to cater for their specific needs.

The session is called “I.C.E” Inclusive Club of Exercise” and takes place from 7pm to 8pm and the charge is £1.00. There are still a few places available for anyone who may qualify for this session.

If you know of someone who may benefit from taking part in the ICE session please pass on this information or if you wish to book onto the session do not hesitate to contact:
